Group attendance at the EBSA meeting

Work from our group was presented at the EBSA July 2025 congress in Rome by Matilde Accorsi (Matti A.), Matilde Becheroni (Matti B.) and Elias Sabri. The work of Matti A. was selected for an oral presentation and her talk on "Sprouting vesicles and far-reaching nanotubes: a journey to lipid networks" impressed the audience. Matti B. presented results with her poster on "Light-responsive asymmetric membranes" and Elias presented a poster on "Combining spectroscopy techniques and pulsed electric fields to characterize the material properties of biomolecular condensates", which covered work from his new preprint. Matti A providing analogies to Italian pizza…

Rumiana Dimova Awarded the Avanti/EBSA Award

Rumiana Dimova Awarded the Avanti/EBSA Award

MPI press release (link) The European Biophysical Societies' Association (EBSA), together with Avanti Polar Lipids, has honored Dr. Rumiana Dimova with the prestigious Avanti / EBSA Award in recognition of her "pioneering development work on giant unilamellar vesicles”. The award was presented at the EBSA 2025 congress in Rome. This award highlights Dr. Dimova's significant contributions to understanding membrane biophysics, particularly through her innovative work using giant vesicles to explore fundamental membrane properties. R. Dimova is also a co-editor of The Giant Vesicle Book (Dimova & Marques, eds., CRC Press, 2019), a comprehensive reference in the field that has helped…

To Stick or Not to Stick: New Findings About Condensates-Membranes Interactions

To Stick or Not to Stick: New Findings About Condensates-Membranes Interactions

MPI press release (link) and EU SynCell press release (link) ... about membrane shape changes induced by condensate droplets. Article: Mangiarotti et al. Nature Commun 16, 2756 (2025) Lipid packing and cholesterol content regulate membrane wetting and remodeling by biomolecular condensates. Check the Bluesky thread for more images and explanations. We explored how biomolecular condensates "decide" which membrane they like to stick to. It turns out that cholesterol and membrane packing—not just the membrane phase—determines this affinity. Our study shows that tightly packed membranes repel condensates, while loosely packed ones attract them. We also see that condensates don’t just bind-they…

Farewell Agu!

Farewell Agu!

March 14, 2025 After three and a half incredibly productive years with us, Agustín (Agu) Mangiarotti is moving on to new adventures. During his time here, he published several high-impact papers, introduced innovative techniques, and brought fresh perspectives to the lab. Beyond his scientific contributions, Agu was a great colleague - always engaging and ready to laugh at funny and not-so-funny jokes. We’ll miss you, Agu, and wish you all the best in your next chapter! Last pizza orgy with Agu Smiling in Golm Agu's articles Lipid packing and cholesterol content regulate membrane wetting and remodeling by biomolecular condensates, A.…
